What Is a Travel Consent Letter?

A travel consent letter — also called a child travel authorization or parental consent form — is a signed and notarized document giving permission for a minor to travel internationally without both parents present. It typically includes the child's information, travel dates and destinations, the name of the accompanying adult, and the notarized signature of the non-traveling parent.

Many countries, including Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and most of Europe, may ask for this document at the border. Airlines can also request it before boarding. U.S. Customs and Border Protection strongly recommends carrying one even when it is not legally required, as it can prevent delays, questioning, or denial of entry at your destination.

For divorced or separated parents in the Gig Harbor and Tacoma area, a notarized travel consent letter is often essential for every international trip. We provide same-day mobile notary service so you can get this handled quickly, even the day before departure.

When You Need One

Divorced or Separated Parents

Child traveling internationally with one parent. The non-traveling parent signs the consent letter authorizing the trip. This is the most common request we receive.

Grandparent or Relative Travel

Child traveling with grandparents, aunts, uncles, or family friends. Both parents sign consent for the accompanying adult to travel with the minor.

School Trips & Summer Camps

International school trips, exchange programs, mission trips, and overseas summer camps where a group leader accompanies the children.

Custody Arrangements

Court-ordered travel restrictions or custody agreements that require documented consent from the non-custodial parent before international travel.

Travel Consent Letter FAQ

What should be in the travel consent letter?

A complete travel consent letter should include the child's full name, date of birth, and passport number; the traveling parent or guardian's full name and relationship; the non-traveling parent's full name and contact information; specific travel dates and destinations; and a clear statement of consent. Many templates are available online, or your family law attorney can prepare one. We notarize the document — we do not prepare it.

Do both parents need to be present for notarization?

No. Only the parent who is signing the consent letter needs to be present for notarization. The traveling parent does not need to be there. If both parents need to sign (for grandparent travel, for example), they can sign at the same appointment or at separate appointments.

What if the other parent will not sign?

We cannot advise on legal disputes between parents. If the other parent refuses to sign a consent letter, you may need to consult a family law attorney about obtaining a court order authorizing the travel. We can notarize a court-ordered travel authorization if one is issued.

Can I use a travel consent letter for domestic travel?

A notarized consent letter is not legally required for domestic travel within the United States. However, some airlines and TSA may ask questions if a child is traveling with only one parent or a non-parent. Having a notarized letter can make the process smoother and avoid delays at the airport.

How long is a travel consent letter valid?

There is no universal standard. Most consent letters specify the exact travel dates and are valid only for that trip. Some parents prepare a letter covering a longer period (such as a school year) if the child travels frequently. We recommend including specific dates for each trip to avoid any ambiguity at the border.
